By Golly Gee!

It feels like Friday was forever ago, but realistically I only spent three full days in Washington. I made it from the airport to the train station by bus, and then took the metro to Kelli’s neighborhood where she met me. I was pretty excited to use the metro since I hadn’t been on an actual “metro” since Paris! The people don’t sound the same in DC as they did in Paris, but hey, it’s still the metro.

Friday night we ended up staying in and resting up for a full Saturday. We got up and finished watching Ratatouille (which we were too tired to watch all of Friday night), and then headed out to catch some sights. Once we got off the metro we spent the next five to six hours walking all over. We saw the Washington Monument, then the World War II Memorial which was pretty cool…obviously hadn’t seen that one before.

Then we made our way to the Lincoln Memorial. It was so windy there…thankfully it wasn’t super cold out otherwise we would have been miserable. But it was good. From Abe, we visited Al. Albert Einstein.

Kelli said it’s her favorite statue in DC and I thought it was pretty cool because it was almost hidden. If I was never told it was there, I wouldn’t know to look for it. Then we visited the Vietnam Memorial and there were a lot of people there. Definitely the quietest part of DC I think I’ve ever been to. Except of course, for the Southerners on their cell phones…that was somewhat disturbing. We had also stopped into one of the museums to check out the Hope Diamond. That was all we went in for and then we left. There were more southerners there to which we laughed at one’s reaction to the Hope Diamond….”By golly gee, that there’s the biggest diamond I ever seen!” I’m not kidding, that’s for real!

From those sights we walked to Georgetown and had some lunch at a nice pub. We sat at a cool table by the window so we got to do a lot of people watching during lunch! One of my favorite things to do. And after we filled ourselves up, we did some shopping in Georgetown before heading back to Kelli’s place. After that whole time walking around in the wind, Kelli made some hot chocolate and we relaxed before our dinner date with Matias at 9:30. When Kelli and I were in high school I used to spend a weekend at her house when her parents went away and we would always order food late. We always thought that rich people ate late…so even though we were ordering Chinese food, we still pretended we had tons of money. Which is what we thought of dinner at 9:30 too! We ended up meeting Matias for drinks at one place first. Then we headed to a newer restaurant in the DC area that was awesome. We had a couple bottles of wine and lots of food! We split a full charcuterie board, then we had the foie gras which came on French toast (the morning kind), and the beef sashimi. The beef sashimi was different because it wasn’t chopped, but sliced. I still enjoyed it! Then we had some pork with a pumpkin risotto and a nice, tender hangar steak. Both were very delicious. Then they sent us four desserts! I remember the fruity panna cotta the most. I can’t remember all of those…the wine must have kicked in by then??? So after spending five hours in the restaurant, it was time for bed!

Sunday we got up and headed to Eastern Market. This was a cool area with a big flea market outside and lots to look at and buy. I did buy a few things, but not much. We had brunch at a pretty cool place. I had an omelet with mashed potatoes in it. It was very good…just forget that I used to work in fitness, okay? :-) We also picked up some fresh pastas, sauces, and garlic bread to bring home for dinner at night. But before going home, we went to see the Capitol Building and then went into the Air and Space Museum. We didn’t spend long in there either, but I remembered that being one of my favorite Smithsonians when I visited with my parents so I was glad to go back. It’s really cool that all the museums are free. I like how you can come and go and you don’t have to feel bad if you don’t see everything you want to. Just go back…it’s free! I never made it to the White House, but I did see the bushes…they’re looking good.

At night we made our pastas and just relaxed. We really had done a lot of walking and it was pretty windy there, so it just wore me out! We had picked up a goat cheese and butternut ravioli, tomato and basil linguini, and goat cheese, butternut, and apple ravioli. We had the linguini with a marinara sauce and the raviolis with a walnut pesto sauce. My favorite was the plain butternut and goat cheese ravioli.

Monday was a working day for both me and Kelli. I’m lucky to have the flexibility to work from most places so I did a lot from her apartment. At night we headed out to watch the Pats play Baltimore. There weren’t many people out watching…because they were all at the game! We actually only watched half the game out and finished it at Kelli’s place because we were tired. I know, we’re getting old! And speaking of football fans…I’m on my plane back to Boston right now actually, and it’s full of people who were at the game last night. It’s kind of a tight fit with all these, big, strong men on board. Who am I kidding? It’s kinda cool! Haha But actually for those of you who haven’t been outside in the wind, we had a pretty rough take-off so I have to put my computer away for take-down now. I love flying and rarely get scared, but it was errrr, pretty bouncy and shaky.

Good thing I made friends with the flight attendant who was whispering “go colts” into the speaker while everyone was boarding. I thought it was funny and told him he wouldn’t be able to do that had we lost last night. And then a guy in a pink fuzzy hat got on board. Apparently he lost a bet…and kept everyone smiling through our ascent.

Ok gotta run, or land I should say.

Chow from the sky,

KK
